Assessment Stage - ZERO Scale®
The ZERO Scale, consisting of both Safety (ZS-S) and Wellbeing (ZS-W) versions, has been deigned by Sentis safety professionals and psychologists to assist in identifying people's safety/wellbeing related thinking patterns (attitudes). Research indicates that the way a person thinks about safety/wellbeing drives their behaviours, which in turn contribute toward an individual’s safety/wellbeing results. Identifying safety/wellbeing thinking patterns is important because some thinking patterns enhance and encourage safety/wellbeing performance, whilst other thinking patterns hinder it. Within ZIP we focus on developing 5 core safety/wellbeing-related thinking patterns which, when well developed, are more likely to keep people safer, healthier and well. The ZERO Scale is the tool used to measure these 5 core thinking patterns.
Completion of the ZERO Scale prior to ZIP provides participants with an awareness of their current safety/wellbeing thinking patterns that are likely to be influencing their safety/wellbeing results. The provision of this information creates an opportunity for ZIP participants to reflect upon and change their attitudes toward safety/wellbeing with the goal of assisting them to create more helpful thinking patterns and ultimately achieve the goal of Zero Incidents for themselves and their site and organisation as a whole. While this insight is very important, we suggest it is completed on a voluntary basis by each participant.
The testing of an organisation's workforce provides a site/office-wide risk-profile detailing the thinking patterns of its employees most likely to impact upon its safety/wellbeing results. An organisation will be provided with an overall aggregate report of the results from the assessment. This Pre-ZIP profile would provide a baseline measure which future changes in safety/wellbeing attitudes Post-ZIP could be assessed against. The Pre-ZIP profile would provide an organisation with the necessary information to conduct a thorough empirical pre-post assessment of the impact of ZIP on its employee's safety/wellbeing attitudes by comparing their Pre-ZIP risk-profile to a Post-ZIP profile.
Alternatively, both versions of the ZERO Scale have been utilised outside of ZIP as part of the recruitment processes for a number of large mining and resource organisations, in addition to a variety of recruitment companies.
