Maintenance Stage - ZIPCoach™
The ZIPCoach Phase transfers significant amounts of our specialised knowledge into your business. ZIPCoaches maintain the SafeDays/GreatDays process in your business and conduct the one-year ZIP reviews with your teams onsite. They are also trained to conduct safety/wellbeing-based business improvement processes within your organisation. Staff will be selected by Sentis psychologists in conjunction with senior management to act as workplace ZIPCoaches. ZIPCoach training is a three (3) day process of further education in the psychology of safety/wellbeing and communication. We suggest a ratio of one ZIPCoach for each 60-100 people in your business.
Safety has a unique set of psychological dilemmas. Basic psychology says that if you want to increase a behaviour you reward it, if you want to lessen the behaviour you punish it and if you want to extinguish the behaviour you ignore it. The obvious challenge is that we cannot ignore unsafe behaviours. From the workers point of view they work safely 99.99% of the time and rarely get an acknowledgement of their efforts. As soon as they are unsafe however, they are punished. This is poor safety psychology and counter productive to the goal of Zero Incidents.
How we address this challenge in ZIP is via Safety Contact Cards (SCCs). SCCs are designed to focus our brain (RAS) on, and to reward in a systematic way, the safety behaviours that will keep people safe. Most often they are used by the ZIPCoaches however, more and more of our clients are using them as a leadership tool as well.
